my son started preschool this year.... so i made him a little bag to take his lunchbox and water bottle in.
he loves dinosaurs, so drew a few on a piece of plain calico with a textile marker, and he coloured them in using fabric crayons.
i found the pattern for the bag in a great book i have on my bookshelf called sewing for boys. there is a helpful website here for this book too
I love bags.... its even better making them.
:: have you ever made a bag of your own or for someone else?
That is so adorable! Love the little dinosaurs.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous bag! What a great idea to draw the dinosaurs and let you son colour them in himself!! I bet he loves his bag. I make bags for my girls and they love that theirs are special and not like anyone elses!

Great bag for a boy! The dinosaurs made me smile. I make bags for myself and for my friends and my kids too. It's nice to know that no-one else has a bag quite like yours.
ReplyDeletei've made morning tea bags for my girls ever since they started pre-school (organic cotton of course!)and i've sent them off to school this year with some new ones - they love them! and again, nobody else has one like theirs! even the teachers know who belongs to the bag that is always left in the playground !! mel x
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea. I have to seek out these fabric pens. soo cool.
ReplyDeletejust learning to make bags myself. actually i think every new project needs its own bag.

Good job Mum! I think it's fab that he had input into making it too. :)
ReplyDeleteI've made hobbie bags and tote bags for my girls but I love the little pocket on this year. very cute and the dinosaurs are a sweet and personal touch.
ReplyDeleteoops should read...this one. anyway gorgeous bag:)
ReplyDeleteLove the dinosaurs! I like making bags but haven't done a school one (since they truly need sturdy backpacks) but think a special one for when my girl begins preschool later this year is in order! I like the comment about the teacher knowing whose bag it is, above...I knit my kids winter hats & they're always easy to spot in a crowd & everybody knows whose hat it is!
ReplyDeletehello everyone... thanks for the comments and talking openly about your experience of making bags and other things.
ReplyDelete....it seems a familiar response in this post that our kids gear (& them too) are easy to identify amongst a crowd because we have taken the time to make something unique.
... isn't it nice to have difference in this world of so much sameness that mass production creates! ... and i am sure we are building some good, strong and individual characteristics in our children too :)
This is too cute! I need to find some fabric crayons! My kids would LOVE that! xx
ReplyDeletelots of people have been asking me about the fabric crayons i have used to colour the fabric...
ReplyDeletethey are called -- fabric fun pastel dye sticks -- they cost about $4.... you can buy them here.... http://www.pentel.com.au/shop/step1.php?number=919
& the black textile marker i bought from my local art shop for about $10... the brand is encre pigment ink... its a japanese brand, i am sure there are cheaper ones, but this one has lasted for years!
