BIRCHseed now selling through a new market place...

BIRCHseed is trialling 2 new online market places (and giving the bigwigs - Madeit and Etsy a little rest....) I feel its time to support some new Australian small businesses to get up and going.

so today i am introducing you to..... Andable. Andable is a global marketplace launched just this week in beautiful Sydney, Australia as a partnership between Rupal Ismin, Melissa Dean, and a web development agency called Interesting.

"Andable aims to empowers those in need that are willing and able. The cycle of poverty can end for many when given access to basic financial services like loans. The Andable community helps make this possible... 

For every sale our shops make, 10% goes to a micro loan fund to help people in need.  

The 10% has deep roots. Starting as an impoverished boy without shoes in India and continuing throughout his life, Dr. Chhotubhai Patel donated 10% of all his income to charity. This had a profound influence on Rupal Ismin, his granddaughter and co-founder of Andable. The 10% inspired Rupal to reshape our connection with buying and to help spread a new way of helping people in poverty."

its yoga time

you may be wondering whats happened to BIRCHseed?...

well we are refining things for the next 6 months whilst i pursue a few new skills.....i am doing a yoga teacher training course.

i will still print and sell my wares, but things will be a bit slower in the interim.

a making for my son

i purchased a nice little book a few months back as it had some really sweet items to make that could be for boys or girls.... i like things that don't scream 'pink' for girls and are not 'thomas the tank engine' related for boys.

since a recent beach holiday, my son loves all things sea-related + one of his favourite books is 'magic beach' which is full of rock pools with limpets, crabs, sea horses and of course lots of mystical magic too!

so.... i chose to crochet this blanket for his room, as it looks a bit rock pool-ish  / sea anemone-ish

it used up 18 balls of 8ply grey wool + small amounts of other colours

each larger circle used up 1 ball each!

i did double the wool though to get it extra chunky.

i love it even better flipped over to the reverse side, as it 'pops' out a bit more.

my son loves to drag it off his bed and jump onto the circles, saying the colours as he jumps from one to the other.... so it kinds doubles as a memory game too.

getting market ready

its raining & my son has a day at preschool today, so i am making some little things to sell at my next market...

zip purses in assorted shapes and sizes....

a new butterfly print...

up-cycled metal zips from my mothers sewing collection she handed over to me last year

vintage floral sheets used for the lining...

organic hemp denim on the back (and organic hemp base cloth for my prints too)

such fun to make, especially as no two are the same...

a preschool bag for my boy

my son started preschool this year.... so i made him a little bag to take his lunchbox and water bottle in.

he loves dinosaurs, so drew a few on a piece of plain calico with a textile marker, and he coloured them in using fabric crayons.

i found the pattern for the bag in a great book i have on my bookshelf called sewing for boys. there is a helpful website here for this book too

I love bags.... its even better making them.
